Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 2/3 cup sugar

  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder

  • 2 tsp baking powder

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 2 tbsp melted butter

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)

  • 3/4 cup brown sugar

  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder

  • 1 3/4 cup hot water

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.

  • Make the batter: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Stir in milk, melted butter, and vanilla until smooth. Fold in nuts, if using.

  • Transfer batter: Spread the batter evenly in the prepared baking dish.

  • Make the topping: In a small bowl, mix brown sugar and 1/4 cup cocoa powder. Sprinkle evenly over the batter.

  • Add water: Slowly pour hot water over the top. Do not stir.

  • Bake: Bake for 35-40 minutes until the cake has set on top and fudge sauce bubbles underneath.

  • Serve: Cool slightly. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

  • The fudge sauce will thicken as it cools slightly.

  • Use dark cocoa powder for a deeper chocolate flavor.

  • Add a pinch of espresso powder to the batter for a mocha twist.
