1 cup all-purpose flour
2/3 cup sugar
1/4 cup cocoa powder
2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup milk
2 tbsp melted butter
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1 3/4 cup hot water
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
Make the batter: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Stir in milk, melted butter, and vanilla until smooth. Fold in nuts, if using.
Transfer batter: Spread the batter evenly in the prepared baking dish.
Make the topping: In a small bowl, mix brown sugar and 1/4 cup cocoa powder. Sprinkle evenly over the batter.
Add water: Slowly pour hot water over the top. Do not stir.
Bake: Bake for 35-40 minutes until the cake has set on top and fudge sauce bubbles underneath.
Serve: Cool slightly. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream.
The fudge sauce will thicken as it cools slightly.
Use dark cocoa powder for a deeper chocolate flavor.
Add a pinch of espresso powder to the batter for a mocha twist.
