  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract

For the Chocolate Glaze:

  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 4 oz semi-sweet chocolate, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. Prepare the Cake: In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla. Alternately add the flour mixture and milk to the butter mixture, mixing gently until just combined. Divide the batter between pans and bake for 22–25 minutes. Cool completely on wire racks.
  3. Make the Custard: In a medium saucepan, heat milk until steaming. Whisk sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks in a bowl. Slowly add hot milk while whisking. Return to the pan and cook, whisking until thickened. Remove from heat, stir in butter and vanilla. Cover surface with plastic wrap and chill for at least 2 hours.
  4. Prepare the Glaze: Heat cream until it simmers. Pour over chopped chocolate. Let sit 2 minutes, then stir until smooth.
  5. Assemble the Cake: Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread chilled custard over the top. Add the second cake layer and pour ganache on top, letting it drip down the sides. Chill for 1 hour before slicing and serving.
