A delightful Cherry Custard Puff Pastry Wreath featuring a flaky, golden puff pastry filled with creamy vanilla custard and sweet cherry pie filling. Perfect for breakfast, brunch, or dessert, this elegant yet easy-to-make wreath is finished with a dusting of powdered sugar and optional drizzles of honey or icing for extra sweetness and shine.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Wreath

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 cup cherry pie filling (or homemade cherry compote)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

For the Vanilla Custard

  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

For Finishing

  • Powdered sugar (optional)
  • Extra cherries for garnish
  • A drizzle of honey or icing (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the Custard: In a saucepan, whisk together the milk, sugar, cornstarch, egg yolk, salt, and vanilla extract. Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly until the mixture thickens and becomes creamy. Remove from heat and allow the custard to cool completely before using.
  2. Prepare the Puff Pastry: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Lay the thawed puff pastry sheet flat on a baking surface. Spread a ring of the cooled vanilla custard around the center of the pastry, leaving the edges clear to form a border. Spoon the cherry pie filling carefully over the custard ring.
  3. Shape the Wreath: Roll the puff pastry sheet lengthwise carefully into a log, enclosing the custard and cherry filling inside. Shape the rolled log into a circular wreath and pinch the ends together to seal. Make evenly spaced slits around the circle, being careful not to cut all the way through. Gently twist each section outward slightly to expose the custard and cherry filling for a decorative effect.
  4. Bake: Brush the entire wreath with the beaten egg to create a shiny golden crust after baking. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed, golden, and crisp.
  5. Finish & Serve: Allow the wreath to cool slightly. Dust with powdered sugar and garnish with extra cherries. Optionally, drizzle with honey or icing for added sweetness and shine before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure the custard is completely cool before spreading to prevent puff pastry from becoming soggy.
  • Use fresh or homemade cherry compote for better flavor and fewer preservatives.
  • Egg wash gives the wreath a beautiful golden finish; do not skip this step.
  • Handle the puff pastry gently to keep it flaky and light.
  • This wreath can be served warm or at room temperature and pairs beautifully with coffee or tea.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 days; reheat gently in the oven for best texture.
