For the Cake (2 layers):

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or milk + 1 tsp lemon juice)
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot coffee (or hot water)

For the Chocolate Ganache Frosting:

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 500 g (18 oz) dark chocolate, chopped
  • 2 tbsp butter (for shine)

For the Drip Ganache:

  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 150 g (5 oz) dark chocolate

For Decoration:

  • Assorted chocolate truffles
  • Chocolate kisses/drops
  • Golden sprinkles or crunchy pearls
  • Optional: cocoa powder or powdered sugar dusting

Instructions

  1. Bake the Cake – Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 8-inch round cake pans. In a large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla. Mix until smooth. Stir in hot coffee until the batter is thin and glossy. Divide into pans and bake 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely before decorating.
  2. Make the Frosting Ganache – Heat cream until steaming. Pour over chopped chocolate. Let sit for 5 minutes, then stir until silky smooth. Chill slightly until spreadable.
  3. Frost the Cake – Place one cake layer on a stand, spread ganache. Add second layer, then cover the whole cake with ganache, smoothing with a spatula. Chill for 20–30 minutes to set.
  4. Make the Drip Ganache – Heat cream, pour over 150 g chocolate. Stir until smooth. Let cool slightly, then spoon or pipe drips around cake edge.
  5. Decorate – Pipe ganache swirls or dollops around the edge. Place chocolate truffles and kisses on top. Scatter golden pearls/sprinkles. Add candles if it’s for a celebration! 🎉
