Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients:

  • 2 ½ cups (310g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, room temp
  • 1 ¾ cups (350g) sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240ml) whole milk
  • ½ cup (120ml) sour cream or yogurt

For the chocolate portion:

  • ½ cup (50g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup (60ml) hot water or brewed coffee

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F). Grease and flour two 8-inch cake pans.
  2. Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy (2–3 minutes).
  4. Add eggs one at a time, beating well. Stir in vanilla.
  5. Mix in sour cream/yogurt.
  6. Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk, beginning and ending with dry.
  7. Divide the batter in half. To one half, mix in the cocoa + hot water mixture to create your chocolate layer.
  8. Option 1: Marble Style: Spoon vanilla and chocolate batter alternately into the pans. Swirl with a knife for a marbled effect.
  9. Option 2: Two Layers: Pour chocolate batter into one pan and vanilla into the other — bake both for stacked layers.
  10. Bake for 28–32 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
