Ideal for comforting family meals or elegant dinner parties, these mashed potatoes pair beautifully with a variety of main courses.

Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes

  • 2.5 lbs (1.1 kg) Yukon Gold or russet potatoes, peeled and cubed

Dairy & Butter

  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup warm milk or heavy cream

Herbs & Seasoning

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp fresh chives, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 tsp dried thyme)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Potatoes: Place peeled and cubed potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold salted water. Bring the water to a boil to start cooking the potatoes evenly from the outside in.
  2. Cook Potatoes: Boil the potatoes for 15–18 minutes, or until they are fork-tender. Drain the water thoroughly to prevent sogginess.
  3. Sauté Garlic and Melt Butter: In the same pot, lower the heat and melt the unsalted butter. Add the minced garlic and gently sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.
  4. Mash Potatoes: Return the drained potatoes to the pot with the butter and garlic. Mash them thoroughly until smooth using a potato masher or ricer for best results.
  5. Add Creaminess: Gradually add the warm milk or heavy cream to the mashed potatoes while continuing to mash, until the mixture reaches a creamy and fluffy consistency.
  6. Season: Season the mashed potatoes generously with salt and black pepper according to your taste preferences.
  7. Add Herbs: Gently fold in the finely chopped parsley, chives, and thyme leaves, distributing the fresh herbs evenly throughout the mash.
  8. Serve: Serve the creamy herb mashed potatoes warm as a comforting side dish alongside your favorite protein or vegetable main courses.

Notes

  • For richer mashed potatoes, use heavy cream instead of milk.
  • You can substitute fresh thyme with dried thyme; reduce the quantity in this case to half.
  • Make sure to warm the milk or cream before adding to prevent cooling the mashed potatoes and helping them stay fluffy.
  • Use a potato ricer for an ultra-smooth texture if preferred.
  • This recipe pairs wonderfully with roasted meats, grilled vegetables, or holiday meals.
