Red Velvet Cake:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar
  • 1 oz red food coloring

Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy.
  4. Beat in eggs one at a time. Add vanilla and food coloring.
  5. Alternate adding flour mixture and buttermilk. Stir in vinegar last.
  6. Divide batter into pans and bake 30–35 minutes. Cool completely.
  7. For frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla.
