Dry Ingredients:

  • 1 ¾ cups (220 g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups (400 g) sugar
  • ¾ cup (75 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt

Wet Ingredients:

  • 2 large eggs 🥚
  • 1 cup (240 ml) milk
  • ½ cup (120 ml) vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240 ml) hot water 💧

Instructions

  1. Prepare oven & pan: Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch pan or two 9-inch round pans.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, sift together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Mix wet ingredients: In another bowl, whisk eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla until well combined.
  4. Combine: Pour wet mixture into dry mixture. Mix just until blended.
  5. Add hot water: Stir in hot water slowly (batter will be thin, that’s normal—this makes it fluffy).
  6. Bake: Pour batter into prepared pan(s). Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. Cool & serve: Let cool before removing from pan. Frost with chocolate ganache, buttercream, or enjoy as is! 🎂💖
