Cookie Dough
- Unsalted butter – ½ cup, softened
- Granulated sugar – ½ cup
- Egg – 1 large
- Vanilla extract – 1 teaspoon
- All-purpose flour – 2 cups
- Baking powder – 1 teaspoon
- Salt – a pinch
Egg Wash
- Egg yolk – 1
- Milk – 1 tablespoon
- Prepare the Dough: Mix the softened butter and granulated sugar together in a large bowl until the mixture becomes creamy and light in color. Add the egg and vanilla extract and continue blending until the batter is smooth and well combined.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Gradually add this dry mix into the butter mixture, stirring carefully until a soft dough forms.
- Chill the Dough: Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate it for 20 to 30 minutes. Chilling makes the dough firmer and easier to roll and shape.
- Shape the Cookies: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to about ¼ inch thickness. Using a round scalloped cookie cutter, cut out shapes and place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
- Apply Egg Wash and Pattern: Whisk together the egg yolk and milk to make the egg wash. Brush each cookie lightly with the egg wash. Then use a fork to press down gently on the cookies in a criss-cross pattern, creating the classic decorative fork marks.
- Bake the Cookies: Preheat the oven to 170°C–175°C (338°F–347°F). Bake the cookies for 12 to 15 minutes or until they turn lightly golden around the edges.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the cookies from the oven and transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. Allow them to firm up before serving for the best texture.
Notes
- Make sure the butter is softened at room temperature for easier mixing.
- Chilling the dough helps maintain the shape of the cookies while baking.
- You can substitute vanilla extract with almond extract for a different flavor.
- Use a fork gently to avoid breaking the cookies when making the criss-cross pattern.
- Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
- For an even richer taste, consider brushing with melted butter after baking instead of egg wash.
