These homemade buttery criss-cross cookies are delightfully crisp and light, featuring a tender crumb and a classic fork-mark pattern. Perfect for tea time or as a sweet treat, these cookies combine simple pantry staples into a charming, nostalgic dessert.

Ingredients

Cookie Dough

  • Unsalted butter – ½ cup, softened
  • Granulated sugar – ½ cup
  • Egg – 1 large
  • Vanilla extract – 1 teaspoon
  • All-purpose flour – 2 cups
  • Baking powder – 1 teaspoon
  • Salt – a pinch

Egg Wash

  • Egg yolk – 1
  • Milk – 1 tablespoon

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Mix the softened butter and granulated sugar together in a large bowl until the mixture becomes creamy and light in color. Add the egg and vanilla extract and continue blending until the batter is smooth and well combined.
  2. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Gradually add this dry mix into the butter mixture, stirring carefully until a soft dough forms.
  3. Chill the Dough: Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate it for 20 to 30 minutes. Chilling makes the dough firmer and easier to roll and shape.
  4. Shape the Cookies: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to about ¼ inch thickness. Using a round scalloped cookie cutter, cut out shapes and place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
  5. Apply Egg Wash and Pattern: Whisk together the egg yolk and milk to make the egg wash. Brush each cookie lightly with the egg wash. Then use a fork to press down gently on the cookies in a criss-cross pattern, creating the classic decorative fork marks.
  6. Bake the Cookies: Preheat the oven to 170°C–175°C (338°F–347°F). Bake the cookies for 12 to 15 minutes or until they turn lightly golden around the edges.
  7. Cool and Serve: Remove the cookies from the oven and transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. Allow them to firm up before serving for the best texture.

Notes

  • Make sure the butter is softened at room temperature for easier mixing.
  • Chilling the dough helps maintain the shape of the cookies while baking.
  • You can substitute vanilla extract with almond extract for a different flavor.
  • Use a fork gently to avoid breaking the cookies when making the criss-cross pattern.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
  • For an even richer taste, consider brushing with melted butter after baking instead of egg wash.
