A delicious and savory Mushroom Swiss Burger recipe featuring juicy beef patties topped with melted Swiss cheese and sautéed garlic mushrooms, served on toasted buttered buns with optional fresh toppings.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Burgers:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 recommended)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 2 tablespoons butter

For the Mushroom Topping:

  • 8 oz (225g) mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)

Optional Toppings:

  • Lettuce
  • Tomato slices
  • Pickles
  • Onion slices
  • Mayonnaise, mustard, or ketchup

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mushrooms: Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced mushrooms and sauté for 5–7 minutes until they turn golden brown. Add minced garlic, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce if using, then cook for an additional 1–2 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Burger Patties: Form the ground beef into 4 even patties. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper. Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat to get it ready for cooking.
  3. Cook the Burgers: Place the patties on the grill or skillet and cook for 3–5 minutes per side depending on your preferred doneness. In the last minute of cooking, add a slice of Swiss cheese on top of each patty and cover with a lid to melt the cheese thoroughly.
  4. Toast the Buns: Lightly butter each hamburger bun and toast them on the grill or in a skillet until they turn golden brown and slightly crisp.
  5. Assemble the Burgers: Place each cooked patty on the bottom half of the toasted buns. Spoon the sautéed mushrooms over the patties, add any optional toppings like lettuce, tomato, pickles, or onion slices, and condiments like mayonnaise, mustard, or ketchup. Finish with the top half of the bun and serve immediately for the best taste.

Notes

  • For juicier burgers, avoid pressing down on patties while cooking.
  • You can substitute Swiss cheese with Gruyère or provolone if preferred.
  • Use fresh mushrooms for best flavor; button or cremini mushrooms work well.
  • Worcestershire sauce in mushroom topping is optional but adds depth of flavor.
  • Adjust cooking time based on your desired level of burger doneness.
  • Toast buns to add texture and prevent sogginess from juices and toppings.
