A quick and delicious apple strudel made with flaky puff pastry, tender cinnamon-spiced apples, and served with a creamy homemade vanilla sauce. Perfect for a cozy dessert or an impressive treat with minimal effort.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Strudel:

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 3 medium apples, peeled and sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tbsp powdered sugar (for dusting)

For the Vanilla Sauce:

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Sauté Apples: In a pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced apples, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and lemon juice. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples soften and the mixture is fragrant, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
  3. Prepare Puff Pastry: Lightly flour your work surface and roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet. Spread the cooled apple mixture evenly along one edge of the pastry sheet.
  4. Form Strudel: Fold the sides of the pastry over the apple filling and then roll tightly to form a log shape. Make sure to seal the edges to keep the filling inside.
  5. Egg Wash and Bake: Place the strudel seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the top evenly with the beaten egg to ensure a golden, shiny crust. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown.
  6. Cool and Dust: Remove the baked strudel from the oven and let it cool slightly. Dust the top with powdered sugar before serving.
  7. Make Vanilla Sauce: In a saucepan, whisk together whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and cornstarch until smooth. Heat over medium heat, whisking constantly, until the sauce thickens and coats the back of a spoon.
  8. Serve: Slice the warm apple strudel and serve alongside the creamy vanilla sauce for a delightful dessert experience.

Notes

  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith for better flavor and texture.
  • Ensure the puff pastry is well thawed before rolling to avoid cracking.
  • You can prepare the apple filling a day ahead and refrigerate for convenience.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute butter with margarine and use plant-based milk and cream for the sauce.
  • Serve the strudel warm for the best texture and taste.
